Of all programs provided to youth, there is no specific program to offer year 9 (13-14 years old) students. Michael Weiser and Simon Mildren after attending Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in 2000 felt that they could make a significant impact on this age group. Through their knowledge and leadership skills attained from RYLA and previous experiences, the vision of Camp Awakenings came into focus.

After obtaining the 1999-2000 Rotary Youth Award, a keen expression of interest by the Rotary Club of Aspendale produced the support required to run the first Camp Awakenings.

Camp Awakenings was first held in May 2001 with the support of the Rotary Club of Aspendale and various other clubs from Rotary District 9810. Since then the camp has expanded in support from clubs within the District and has had interest from various corporate bodies. Furthermore the project has had significant interest from other Rotary Clubs and Districts from elsewhere in Australia.

"Camp Awakenings was not somewhere I thought I was meant to be... I felt I had nothing in common with the other participants but after a few hours with them, I realised this wasn't so. I made lots of friends, many of which I still speak to from time to time. I felt better about myself and everything in my life that was a worry before CA, it is the best camp I've been on or ever will. No matter who you think you are, everyone has something to benefit from Camp Awakenings."

"I have heard heaps of public speakers, attended many leadership courses and I have sat through a few workshops, but I have never been as interested as I was on Camp Awakenings and I have never been as inspired to want to be involved in such a project as I was at CA"

"I think everyone should have the opportunity to even just meet the people who run the camp because they are some of the most friendly people I have ever met and they are genuinely interested in who you are as a person and are always there if you need to talk"
